Difficulty Levels

Find the adventure trip that fits you

Adventure has many forms in Patagonia. Whether you love walking, climbing, biking, rowing or just riding around to enjoy the landscape, White Fox Adventures has an adventure trip that fits your lifestyle.

We want to ensure you choose an adventure that matches your interests, technical capabilities, and experience. Being aware of our difficulty levels will help you to choose an adventure that maximizes the enjoyment of the experience.

The difficulty level of each adventure trip is graded into a rating of five categories: Leisure, Recreational, Moderate, Challenging and Avid.

When classifying our activities, we take into consideration the following points:

  • Hours of activity.
  • Elevation.
  • Rucksack weight.
  • Technical difficulty.
  • Exposure to weather conditions (the itineraries that go above the vegetation line expose us to the most severe conditions).

As many factors contribute to a particular trip’s difficulty, since some are necessarily variable, any system of grades can only provide a general indication.

Please Remember

The nature of our trips is such that they involve physical exertion and potential exposure to weather conditions, including cold water, freezing temperatures, heat, sun, wind, and rain.

Individuals who are ill-prepared or select a trip that is beyond their ability could endanger themselves, other guests, and guides, compromising the quality of the group trip experience.

The bottom line is that our trips are active some more than others, so having a good base level of physical fitness is critical. The more prepared and physically fit you are for the adventure, the more you will enjoy the overall experience.

Our primary goal is for you to have an enjoyable experience, if you need more help about the nature of a particular trip or its suitability, please do not hesitate to contact us.

Leisure

These are our least demanding trips. These journeys of discovery involve little or no extended activity and are suitable for people with a basic fitness level and good health. The itinerary may take place in remote areas (with basic facilities) and may involve long travel days on various types of transport. Sightseeing activities can be done on foot.

Tours may include any of the following activities: sightseeing, visiting local villages, birdwatching, and journeys by car, train, or boat. Occasionally, there will be short, gentle walks so that you can adequately explore the cultural sites you are visiting.

Leisure activities examples:

  • Mirador de las Águilas viewpoint.
  • Perito Moreno Glacier.
  • Visit to Estancia Cristina.

Recreational

Trips within this level typically mix sightseeing with easy-paced half and full-day walks. On these trips, activities will take around 4 to 6 hours. There may occasionally be an extended activity day. People that book activities within this level generally stay at hotels and comfortable lodges, although a few go camping for a few nights. These adventures suit people who enjoy easy-paced walks exploring the countryside.

  • 4 to 6 hours of activity.
  • 100 to 400 meters of elevation.
  • No technical difficulty.
  • Low exposure to weather conditions.

Recreational activities examples:

  • Trekking to Laguna Huemul.
  • Cerro Torre viewpoint.
  • Laguna Capri viewpoint.
  • Two-day camp at Poincenot.

Moderate

Suitable for reasonably fit individuals, such as weekend walkers and cyclists. Consistent exercise before these trips is essential.

Adventures of this level typically involve one or more activities such as trekking, cycling, rafting, kayaking or horse riding for 6 or 8 hours daily and 1 to 4 days of activities. Occasionally, there can be more challenging day.

In these trips, participants will often venture into more remote country and can cross mountain passes. Treks may involve carrying a whole pack of around 15 kg. Be prepared for potential variable weather conditions.

Accommodation can include simple hotels, lodges, and camping.

  • 6 to 8 hours of activity.
  • 400 to 800 meters of elevation.
  • No technical difficulty.
  • Potential exposure to variable weather conditions.
  • Rucksack around 15 kg.

Moderate activities examples:

  • Base Camps Circuit.
  • Full day Ice-trek Cagliero Glacier.
  • Río de las Vueltas Kayak.

Challenging

These are physically challenging adventures, where previous preparation will be necessary.

During mountaineering adventures, you must be able to carry a full pack weighing up to 20 kg (depending on the kind of trip you choose) and feel completely comfortable in adverse weather conditions and remote locations where evacuation may be complicated.

These adventure trips involve 8 to 10 hours daily (occasionally more) with considerable ascents and descents. Overnight stops could occur in mountain huts or sleeping tents.

Technical experience is optional; our guides will give you basic instructions if you need some.

Participants should be competent and self-sufficient in the outdoors and have multi-day adventure experience.

  • 8 to 10 hours of activity.
  • 800 to 1200 meters of elevation.
  • Basic technical difficulty.
  • Adverse weather conditions.
  • Rucksack around 20 kg.

Challenging activities examples:

  • Cerro Huemul Circuit.
  • Estancia Helsingfors to Estancia Cristina Circuit.
  • Río Santa Cruz Kayak.

Avid

Our toughest trip involves many long and harsh days, often in remote areas and far from ‘civilization’.

A high fitness level, prior experience, movement efficiency, and good technical skills are required. Ice axes, crampons and safety ropes may be used. Some areas include abseiling and belaying.

Participants will engage in most of these activities, which involve load carrying, setting up camps, cooking and campcrafting.

They are suitable for those with strenuous adventure experience in mountain environments.

  • 10 hours or more of activity.
  • 800 to 1200 meters of elevation.
  • Technical skills required.
  • Adverse weather conditions.
  • Rucksack around 20 kg or more.

Avid activities examples:

  • Southern Ice Field Expedition.
  • Climbing Mount Aconcagua.
  • Climbing Aguja Guillaumet.
